For years, Christian pastors around the world have frequently quoted the passage of Scripture from Numbers 6:24-26 to bless their congregations as they released the people from the service.  Like so many other passages, we hear the pronouncement and, because of familiarity, don’t give it much thought as we go about our business.  Perhaps it is due, in part, to the loss of depth/meaning that always accompanies language translation.  Even the smallest of interpretive error can change the context of what is being communicated.

With that thought in mind, let us examine these three powerful verses, as they were originally written in the Hebrew language.  When we unlock these verses, there is a depth that just doesn’t avail itself through the translation to English.

The LORD bless you and keep you.

Yehovah will kneel before you presenting gifts and will guard you with a hedge of protection.

The LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you.

Yehovah will illuminate the wholeness of His being toward you, bringing order,

and He will give you comfort and sustenance.

The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Yehovah will lift up His wholeness of being and look upon you

and He will set in place all you need to be whole and complete.
